Willow Glen vs. Campbell vs. Cambrian vs. Los Gatos: Which South Bay Neighborhood Is Right for You?

Willow Glen vs. Campbell vs. Cambrian vs. Los Gatos: Which South Bay Neighborhood Is Right for You?

If you’re thinking about moving to San Jose or the surrounding South Bay, choosing the right neighborhood can be just as important as finding the right home.

One thing I love about this area is how different each community feels, even when they’re just a few miles apart. Whether you’re looking for a walkable downtown, great restaurants, highly rated schools, or a more upscale lifestyle, there’s something for everyone.

Here are four of my favorite South Bay communities and what makes each one special!

Willow Glen: Charming, Walkable & Full of Local Favorites

Willow Glen is one of San Jose’s most charming neighborhoods, known for its tree-lined streets and lively downtown along Lincoln Avenue.

Some of my personal favorites include shopping at BellaJames Boutique, grabbing sandwiches at Bertucelli’s La Villa, or heading to Bill’s Cafe for breakfast.

Downtown Willow Glen also hosts some really fun community events throughout the year, including seasonal wine and beer walks, holiday celebrations, and trick-or-treating along Lincoln Avenue. The neighborhood is especially festive during the holidays!

If you love the idea of having local restaurants, boutiques, and coffee shops, Willow Glen is definitely worth exploring.

Campbell: Restaurants, Farmers’ Markets & Community Events

Campbell is one of my favorite places in the South Bay for its lively downtown and seemingly endless options for dining, shopping, and entertainment.

A few of my favorite restaurants include Locanda Sorrento, La Pizzeria, Wild Rose, and Water Tower Kitchen. If you’re looking to watch a game or grab drinks with friends, Katie Bloom’s is a unique dive bar to check out.

One of Campbell’s biggest highlights is its year-round Sunday farmers’ market, along with community events like Oktoberfest, Boogie Music Festival, and Downtown Campbell’s wine walks.

Just outside downtown, you’ll also find The Pruneyard, which has a dine-in movie theater, Luna Mexican Kitchen, Trader Joe’s, BODYROK Pilates, and plenty of other restaurants and shops.

For anyone looking for a social, active community with something going on almost every weekend, Campbell is a great option.

Cambrian: Great Schools & Established Neighborhoods

Cambrian is a quieter, largely residential area of southwest San Jose that’s particularly appealing to buyers looking for well-regarded public schools and a convenient location.

Depending on the address, homes may fall within highly regarded school districts. School assignments should always be verified for each property.

While Cambrian doesn’t have a traditional downtown like Willow Glen or Campbell, residents are just a short drive from restaurants, shopping, and community events in the surrounding areas.

It’s a great neighborhood to consider if you’re looking for a quieter residential setting while still being close to everything the South Bay has to offer.

Los Gatos: Upscale Living Near the Mountains

Los Gatos offers a slightly different lifestyle from the other three communities, with a more upscale feel, beautiful scenery, and a charming downtown.

Located at the base of the Santa Cruz Mountains, Los Gatos is ideal for those who love being closer to nature while still enjoying excellent restaurants, boutique shopping, and wine bars. Some of my personal favorites include Teleferic Barcelona Los Gatos, Out of the Barrel, and the Los Gatos Soda Works.

Downtown Los Gatos has plenty to explore, and the community hosts events throughout the year, including its popular Wine Walk, Music in the Park summer concert series, and Taste of Los Gatos.

Its location also puts you close to some of the South Bay’s most sought-after luxury communities, including Monte Sereno and Saratoga, with convenient access to Highway 17 for trips to Santa Cruz.

If you’re interested in luxury real estate, scenic surroundings, and a more elevated lifestyle, Los Gatos should definitely be on your list.

Which South Bay Community Should You Choose?

The best neighborhood really depends on your lifestyle and what matters most to you.

Willow Glen is great for charm and walkability, Campbell for restaurants and an active social scene, Cambrian for its established neighborhoods and schools, and Los Gatos for upscale living and proximity to the mountains.

My biggest recommendation is to spend time exploring each area before deciding where to buy. Sometimes grabbing coffee, walking around downtown, or visiting a local event can tell you more about a neighborhood than scrolling through listings ever could!
