The Steps to Buying a Home
in the Bay Area
- August 13, 2026
Your real estate agent and lender will guide you through the process, but here’s a simple overview of what buying a home in the Bay Area typically looks like.
1. Connect With a Real Estate Agent
Your first step is finding an agent you trust.
Your agent will help you understand the process, talk through your goals and budget, narrow down where you want to live, and guide you from your first home tour all the way through closing.
You don’t need to have everything figured out before reaching out.
2. Get Pre-Approved
Next, you’ll speak with a lender. Your real estate agent will be able to recommend a few top lenders for you to connect with.
Your lender will help you understand what you qualify for, what your estimated monthly payment could look like and how much cash you may need to purchase a home.
Once you’re pre-approved, you’ll have a much better idea of your price range.
3. Start Your Home Search
Now it’s time to start looking.
You and your agent will narrow down your preferred areas and what you’re looking for in a home. Your agent can then set up a search so you’re notified when new properties that fit your criteria hit the market.
From there, you’ll start touring homes and figuring out what matters most to you.
4. Find the Right Home
When you find a home you’re interested in, your agent will help you take a closer look before making an offer.
This may include reviewing the seller’s disclosures, inspection reports and other information available about the property.
You’ll also talk through comparable sales, competition and your overall offer strategy.
5. Make an Offer
Once you’re ready to move forward, your agent will prepare and submit your offer.
You’ll decide on the purchase price, contingencies, timeline and other terms together based on the property and current market conditions.
Your agent will then communicate with the listing agent and guide you through any negotiations.
6. Go Through Escrow
Once your offer is accepted, you’re officially under contract.
During escrow, you’ll work through the remaining steps with your agent and lender. Depending on your offer, this may include inspections, an appraisal, finalizing your loan and completing the paperwork needed to close.
Your agent will keep track of the important dates and let you know what you need to do along the way.
7. Close and Get the Keys
Before closing, you’ll complete a final walkthrough of the home and sign your final documents.
Once everything is complete and the sale officially records, you’ll get the keys to your new home.
