Is San Jose a Good Place to Live in Your 20s?
- September 2, 2026
If you’re in your 20s and considering a move to San Jose, you’ve probably heard a mix of opinions.
Some people will tell you the South Bay is too suburban, too expensive, or too quiet. Others love the weather, career opportunities, restaurants, and proximity to San Francisco.
I moved to the area in my early 20s, and I think the truth is somewhere in the middle.
San Jose can be a great place to live in your 20s — but a lot depends on where you live, what you like to do, and what kind of lifestyle you’re looking for.
The Area You Choose Matters A Lot
One of the first things I realized after moving here is that San Jose doesn’t really feel like one single city.
Your experience can be completely different depending on where you live.
If you want to be able to walk to coffee shops, restaurants, bars, and weekend events, you may enjoy being closer to places like Downtown Campbell, Downtown Willow Glen, Santana Row, or Los Gatos.
Other parts of San Jose are much more residential and quiet.
Especially in your 20s, I’d think beyond the house or apartment itself and ask what you want your everyday life to look like outside of it.
It’s Not San Francisco — And That Can Be a Good Thing
If your idea of your 20s involves walking outside and having dozens of bars, restaurants, and things happening on every block, San Jose probably isn’t going to feel like San Francisco.
But living in the South Bay doesn’t mean giving up San Francisco either.
You can still head into the city for Giants games, concerts, restaurants, nightlife, or a weekend afternoon without having to live there full time.
For some people, that balance is actually ideal.
Making Friends Can Take Effort
This is probably one of the biggest things I wish people talked about more.
If you move here without already having a built-in social circle, making friends can take some intentional effort.
San Jose is spread out, and there isn’t necessarily one central area where everyone in their 20s naturally ends up.
Joining a workout studio, recreational sports league, volunteer group, or local event can make a big difference.
There are plenty of ways to meet people here, but you may have to be more intentional about finding them.
There’s More to Do Than People Give It Credit For
San Jose sometimes gets a reputation for being boring, but I don’t necessarily think that’s fair.
There are farmers markets, street festivals, concerts, sporting events, wineries, restaurants, shopping areas, trails, and community events happening throughout the South Bay.
You’re also close enough for easy trips to San Francisco, Santa Cruz, Monterey, Napa, Half Moon Bay, and other parts of Northern California.
The lifestyle here is less about having everything directly outside your front door and more about having a lot of different options within reach.
The Cost of Living Is Real
There’s no getting around this one.
Living in San Jose and the Bay Area is expensive, especially when it comes to housing.
If you’re moving here for work, it’s important to look beyond your salary and understand what your actual monthly expenses will look like.
Housing costs are also one reason some people in their 20s start thinking about buying earlier than they expected, especially if they know they plan to stay in the area for several years.
That doesn’t mean buying is automatically the right decision, but it can be worth understanding your options.
So, Is San Jose a Good Place to Live in Your 20s?
I think it can be — for the right person.
If you want nonstop nightlife within walking distance every night, there may be other places that fit you better.
But if you like good weather, career opportunities, restaurants and community events, weekend trips, and the option to live somewhere a little quieter while still being close to San Francisco, San Jose has a lot to offer.
The biggest piece of advice I’d give anyone moving here is to spend time figuring out which part of the South Bay actually fits your lifestyle.
Where you live can completely change your experience here.
